Section 1

Year by year

Every financial year from FY2016-17 to FY2025-26: what the index did, what the median stock did, which sector led, the five best stocks, and how gold, silver, rates and the repo moved alongside.

Survivorship bias applies to every figure on this page

The universe is the 2026 Nifty 500. The eligible count grows from 316 names in FY17 to 473 in FY26 because later constituents had not yet listed — so FY17–FY20 rankings are computed on roughly two-thirds of the universe, and absolute returns are biased upward.

Index vs the median stock

Nifty 500 index vs the median stock, by financial year
A rising index does not mean the average stock rose. FY19 is the clearest case.
Why the index and the median diverge

Index return is cap-weighted, so a handful of large names can carry it. The median stock is the typical company. When the median lags the index badly (FY19: index +8.4% vs median −4.6%) breadth is narrow; when it leads (FY21: median +95.1% vs index +76.0%) the rally is broad. Note also the persistent gap between mean and median: annual stock returns are strongly right-skewed, so a few multibaggers drag the average well above the typical outcome.

Persistence: only 19 names ever repeated

Across ten years there are 200 top-20 slots. Just 19 distinct companies appeared in the top 20 in two consecutive years, forming 20 consecutive pairs. Only JWL managed three consecutive years (FY22→FY23→FY24). There is no meaningful "consistent winner" class — every top-20 list is dominated by names appearing once.
